TOP STORIESBirdville quarterback literally following his brother05:39 PM CDT on Friday, September 5, 2008 Video Ted Madden reports Sept. 4, 2008 Birdville lost its season opener, but the offense scored 34 points and once again appears to be the strength of this team. "I feel real good about our offense," says Sheldon Cook, a defensive end, "trust them like my own brother." It's an interesting choice of words, considering who the quarterback is. Josh Dorman inherits the job from his big brother, Tommy, who led Birdville to 25 wins over 3 years. "Well I got some big shoes to fill," says Josh Dorman. "There's always a little pressure that comes with it, but it's fun." "I thought he did a really good job," said head coach Jim Skinner. "I thought (Fort Worth) Arlington Heights did a good job on defense, they have a lot of speed, a lot of quickness and put a lot of heat on him and he didn't panic, you know, so I was real pleased with his effort." Tommy Dorman is now a redshirt freshman at Texas A&M and his little brother says they talk or text every day. Their relationship helped prepare the younger Dorman for this season. "Well I mean I always had a head start, my freshman and sophomore year, he always helped me out with the offense, anything I didn't understand, I always had a coach at home to help me," he says, "so it's helped a lot." Last year as a sophomore Josh Dorman backed up his older brother, but now the job is his and in his first start at quarterback he threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns. "He did pretty good," says center Chris Burnett. "He had a couple of beautiful balls out there, almost made my cry one time, but he did real good." "It was a deep ball, he got rushed, he just stepped up and threw it, it was like 55-yard bomb, perfect spiral," says wide receiver Clarke Renfro. "Chris was like, I was going to cry." "A lot of people had doubts on him, and you know how when people have doubts, you just want him, you want to see him succeed, and I almost cried," Burnett says. "It was spectacular." It's just a start, but Dorman looks ready to follow in his brother's footsteps. |
